Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Brant Bjork: Mankind Woman

Mankind Woman CoverThe funky former drummer for legendary stoner rock band Kyuss has been steadily making 70s influenced groove rock for years, and his latest effort, Mankind Woman, may be his best. Thick and rich like the chocolate referenced in the killer opener “Chocolatize”, this album sways and swaggers with the best of them.

Mankind Woman was largely written by Bjork and longtime friend & fellow desert rocker Bubba Dupree, and includes guest appearances by Nick Oliveri and Sean Wheeler. If this came out in June instead of September it could have been a contender for album of the summer. It will make you move.

Standout tracks: “Chocolatize”, “Pisces”, “1968”. This is the soundtrack of the funky revolution.

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – The Nekromant Lives

The Nekromant LivesDon’t let the album cover or the fact that this band is from Sweden fool you, this is not death metal by any stretch of the imagination. Instead, it’s an album of pure blues-based heavy rock in the vein of The Sword, early Iron Maiden, Dio-era Black Sabbath, with some Wolfmother thrown in for good measure. It has a great 70s metal vibe from start to finish.

Nekromant (formerly Serpent) recently signed to Ripple Music, a small but mighty label known for hand picking the best up and coming pysch, stoner and heavy rock. The Nekromant Lives is the third album from the heavy metal trio and the first on Ripple. I’m definitely looking forward to hearing more from these guys in the future!

Standout tracks: The Nekromant Lives, Scorpio, Blood for Walpurgis. Available on Bandcamp and from Ripple Records.

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Tom Morello: The Atlas Underground

The Atlas Underground CoverGood god y’all, Tom Morello just dropped his latest solo album The Atlas Underground, which is as chock full of collaborators as a Snickers is full of nuts. Artists like Big Boi, Gary Clark Jr. and more are featured on each track of the ex-RAtM and Audioslave guitarist’s album. It’s a testament to his musicianship that this album manages to hang together as a work despite the range of influences and artists.

Part hip hop, part avant-garde alternative rock, and with a thread of Rage throughout, this is a must listen album. Standout tracks: Battle Sirens (feat. Knife Party), Every Step That I Take (feat. Portugal. The Man and Whethan), and Vigilante Nocturno (feat. Carl Restivo)

Release date: Oct. 12, 2018. Download or stream on your choice of sites, find the links here!
