Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Brant Bjork: Mankind Woman

Mankind Woman CoverThe funky former drummer for legendary stoner rock band Kyuss has been steadily making 70s influenced groove rock for years, and his latest effort, Mankind Woman, may be his best. Thick and rich like the chocolate referenced in the killer opener “Chocolatize”, this album sways and swaggers with the best of them.

Mankind Woman was largely written by Bjork and longtime friend & fellow desert rocker Bubba Dupree, and includes guest appearances by Nick Oliveri and Sean Wheeler. If this came out in June instead of September it could have been a contender for album of the summer. It will make you move.

Standout tracks: “Chocolatize”, “Pisces”, “1968”. This is the soundtrack of the funky revolution.

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Fantastic Negrito

Fantastic NegritoFantastic Negrito is the stage name of Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz, an Oakland-based singer songwriter who just dropped a new album Please Don’t Be Dead in June 2018. From his Facebook page, and I couldn’t have said it better than this, “Fantastic Negrito is black roots music for everyone, Blues with a punk attitude from Oakland”.

It is the best kind of dirty, soulful blues rock and man, if I hadn’t just missed seeing him on tour here, I wouldn’t have even heard of this cat. And now I’m kicking myself for missing out. Don’t make the same mistake, catch him on tour and pick up Please Don’t Be Dead, it will reinvigorate your soul.

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Witch Mountain

Witch Mountain CoverPortland’s legendary doom outfit Witch Mountain just dropped a self-titled LP and it is a must-have for heavy blues, stoner and doom fans!

Witch Mountain has been around since 1997 with a few lineup changes. New vocalist Kayla Dixon is a revelation, her vocals alternately soaring, growling, and hitting you with the heavy feels.

I had the pleasure of seeing them live in San Francisco last week, and they brought arena level energy to the small club I saw them in. These guys are the real deal. Catch them if you can!

Witch Mountain is currently on tour playing with local openers across the US, July 11 to August 12. Their latest effort is available on Bandcamp.
