Mojo’s Pick of the Week – DEMOITIS by Alexa Melo

Cover of Alexa Melo's 90's inspired rock album DemoitisI’ve been following auteur Alexa Melo since she dropped her amazing cover of Marilyn Manson’s The Beautiful People back in 2015. Her latest full length is a fantastic trip into the musical world of her 90s influences, from Marilyn Manson to Mazzy Star, from PJ Harvey to Gwen Stefani.

Melo wrote, performed, and engineered this excellent album herself, and man does it deserve to get noticed. Standout tracks: Man in the Window, Flightless Bird, Hopeful

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – AMMA by Puta Volcano

Puta Volcano AmmaI can’t express how excited I am that those crazy groovy Greeks in Puta Volcano have delivered another syncopated, riff-heavy album of killer tracks with their latest release AMMA, out everywhere now. With their third solid release, Puta Volcano has planted its flag in the sand and saying ‘we are here, motherfuckers.’

The tighter-than-ever quartet has refined its sound from a raw, gritty energy into a restrained, slightly understated but confident power, more like muscles flexing and less like a punch to the face. The rhythm section of Bookies on bass and
Steve Stefanidistill on drums lays a heavy groove and Alex Pi’s guitars go from mean, tight riffs to warm fuzz shower with ease. Anna Papathanasiou’s powerful, husky vocals still raise the hair on the back of my neck. Fans of Tool will dig the latest from these rising stars.

Standout tracks: Venus Lullaby, Black Box

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Saboteur by SANDVEISS

Sandveiss - SaboteurThe latest release from SANDVEISS out of Quebec City, Québec is one of the best full albums I’ve heard lately. 70s influenced melodic hard rock with a grungy 90s feel, this solid set is for anyone who likes Spiritual Beggars, Kyng, Orange Goblin, and other 70s AOR influenced rock.

Recorded over a period of two years and released in late 2019, Saboteur would have made it into my favorite albums of 2019 had I found it sooner!

I honestly know very little about this band, this was a Bandcamp find that immediately found its way into my collection and has become a new favorite. Great songwriting, great vocals, great melodic riffs that get under your skin and haunt your dreams. Give it a spin!
