Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Volume by ZED

Zed Volume CoverA staple of the San Francisco Bay Area underground heavy rock scene since 2007, ZED hits a new level of musical maturity and fires on all cylinders like a badass band who knows what the fuck they’re about on their newest full-length, “Volume”.

Released on Ripple Music in July, this tour de force of solid riffs and heavy grooves is easily one of my favorite albums of 2019. Vocalist/guitarist Pete Sattari’s gravelly vocals have never sounded better, guitarist Greg Lopez’ octane-fuled Sabbathy riffs sound bigger and badder than ever, and the battery of bassist Mark Aceves and skin-beater Sean Boyles is tight and punishing in the best way.

Standout tracks: Wings of the Angel, Chingus, Time and Space. Check out this amazing LEGO based video by multitalented bassist Mark Aceves featuring their single “Chingus”.

Fans of Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden, and Shinedown will dig this hard rocking album, available on Bandcamp and Spotify for instant listening. ZED is currently touring the west coast with the likes of La Chinga, Horseburner, and Age of Truth. Catch them if you can!

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Norman Fucking Rockwell! by Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey NFR coverI’ll bet you thought I was going to say Tool, didn’t you? My favorite band’s long awaited album Fear Inoculum dropped on the same day as this masterpiece, but this is the one that moved me misty eyed.

Lana Del Rey is Mazzy Star, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Alanis Morissette rolled up into one silken-voiced beautifully pouty package, and this album, I’m not even sure what to say about it, except that it’s jaw-droppingly beautiful, heartbreaking, intimate and real. It’s my pick of the week. Put it on and feel something.

Standout tracks: Fuck it I love you, Doin’ Time (Sublime cover), Bartender, Happiness is a butterfly

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Awakened From the Tomb by Witchers Creed

Witchers CreedIf, like me, you dig the current 70s-style proto-metal resurgence and can’t get enough cowbell, you will definitely dig Witchers Creed.

This Swedish foursome sounds like they were pried out of a time capsule fully formed and rocking hard.

Bassist Emil Bjällerhag drives the band with his Geezer inspired rumble, with Charlie Rangstedt completing the battery, under the heavy stoner style riffage of guitarist Filip Andersson and complemented by the passionate melodic vocals of Dennis Blohm Hedlund.

Awakened From the Tomb could easily be a lost album from the late 60s or early 70s, and is nothing but straight ahead fun rock and roll with a Sabbath edge. Check it!

Standout tracks: Witchers Creed, Depths of the Black Void, Raven’s Claw, Larissa
