Mojo’s Pick of the Week – ASG: Survive Sunrise

ASG is one of those bands that if you know, you know. I’ve been into them since MySpace and they have a habit of disappearing and reappearing unexpectedly. Case in point – they just surprise dropped their first album in five years, just in time for a little poolside headbanging!

Hailing from North Carolina, ASG and their brand of punky modern heavy guitar rock evolves and matures with new Relapse Records album Survive Sunrise, which was recorded, mixed and mastered by longtime producer Matt Hyde (Deftones, Slayer, Monster Magnet). Standout tracks: Survive Sunrise, Lightning Song, Heavy Scars, Weekend Money.

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Freedom Hawk: Beast Remains

So much good music released lately, and this is the one I can’t get enough of right now. Virgina’s venerable Freedom Hawk has a brand new album called Beast Remains, and they had me at the first track, the energetic, moving “Solid Gold”.

The band’s sound is reminiscent of the best of 70s AOR and prog rock, while at the same time sounding both modern and timeless. Passionate, melodic, and grooving, Beast Remains is a perfect showcase of the band’s formidable songwriting and musical skills.

Whatever’s in the water at Virginia Beach, I want some. In the meantime, I’m just going to keep enjoying Freedom Hawk rock and hope they come this way soon.

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Witchcryer “Cry Witch”

Witchcryer’s debut release “Cry Witch” is a hypnotic, riff-heavy throwback to the dawn of doom and heavy metal. Fresh off their first US tour in support of “Cry Witch” (previously only available on CD), they have just signed with Ripple Music and re-released their debut on all platforms and vinyl.

Austin, Texas’ old school doomers Witchcryer cites Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Blue Oyster Cult and St. Vitus as influences, and you can hear all of them in the title track “Cry Witch”. Frontwoman Suzy Bravo has some serious attitude in her powerful, gritty vocals. Founding member Jason Muxlow (ex- Earthen Grave) provides the heavy guitar riffs, while drummer Javi Moctezuma and bassist Marilyn provide the doomy battery. Love the bass tone on this album. Pick this up, you won’t be sorry!
