Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Death Angel “The Evil Divide”

Death Angel - The Evil Divide CoverBay Area thrash kings Death Angel are back with a new album on Nuclear Blast Records, “The Evil Divide”, a tour de force of hard-hitting, politically charged metal with melodic elements. Covering a range of topics from the hypocrisy of religion (“The Moth”) to bullying and the culture of terrorism (“Lost”), this album adds a new musical dimension to the long-lived thrash metal band’s already solid catalog.

Tight and angry as hell but melodic and accessible as well, this album is a leap forward for a band that lately seems to be getting better with every album, like their metal brothers Anthrax. There is a new confidence in this album that lets the songs breathe and evolve… it’s got a more well-rounded and mature feel than their last outing “The Dream Calls for Blood”, which was a relentless attack of quick riffs and shouty vocals that felt like one long song in multiple parts. “The Evil Divide” is a great album by a mature band at the top of their game.

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Blackwülf

BlackwulfI don’t even know how I stumbled onto the Bandcamp page for Oakland’s Blackwülf but when I sparked up the stream for their latest release, I got the same feeling I get when I find random money in my pocket. Billing themselves as doom or stoner rock, Blackwülf sounds like a throwback to late 70s heavy metal powerhouses like Judas Priest and Black Sabbath. Killer heavy riffs and a very organic sludgy sound. A new local favorite for me!

Blackwülf’s latest release “Oblivion Cycle” (December 2015) is available on vinyl, CD and download through Ripple Music, and download/streaming is available from Bandcamp.

Fire up your 420 special and listen now….

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Anthrax “For All Kings”

Anthrax For All KingsHow can my pick of the week be anything other than the latest album from thrash metal legends Anthrax?

For All Kings is the band’s 11th studio album, and their second since bringing singer Joey Belladonna back into the fold after being fronted by John Bush of Armored Saint. While the previous album Worship Music was well-received, it was partly written with then-vocalist Dan Nelson in a period of membership turmoil. For All Kings is a true return to form for the legendary Big Four members, sounding like they picked up right where they left off after their outsanding 1990 opus Persistence of Time.

This is an excellent, solid album, the way albums are meant to sound, ebbing and flowing and chock full of strong cuts like Blood Eagle Wings and Breathing Lightning. It just cracked the Billboard top 10 albums, which means you’ve probably bought it already or at least heard it. And if not, what are you waiting for? It’s fucking Anthrax!
