Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Spiritual Beggars

pickI had no idea that long-lived stoner rock stalwarts Spiritual Beggars were from Halmstad, Sweden till I looked it up. SB was formed in 1994 by guitarist Michael Amott of Arch Enemy, Carcass and Carnage fame. Groovy guitar riffs and some funky keyboards give their sound a great classic vibe.

Spiritual Beggars
Their most recent release, Earth Blues, lies somewhere between Deep Purple in its heyday and Dio-fronted Black Sabbath. It’s a rollicking rollercoaster of 70s-style heavy rock that frankly makes some of the best open road driving music I’ve had the pleasure of cranking in my car.

Spiritual Beggars just finished a successful tour of Japan, hopefully we’ll see them in the states before long!

Mojo’s Pick of the Week: Orthodox Fuzz

pickIf you like Southern fried stoner rock that will put the hair back on your chest, you MUST check out Fort Worth’s mighty Orthodox Fuzz. I’ve been following these doomy fuzz rockers for years, and they’ve just released a new EP called Ritual Volume that simply blew me away.

New singer Andrew Kimbrell sounds like he’s been there all along on tracks like Masquerade and Southern Witch. Big guitars, powerhouse vocals, driving beats, the Fuzz have everything I love in a rock band.Orthodox Fuzz

If you like Corrosion of Conformity, Kyuss, Black Sabbath, Alice In Chains, Godsmack, you must check them out! They are playing this Friday the 16th with Kill Devil Hill at the Boiler Room in Dallas. If you can get there, get there! If you can’t, at least pick up their EP you won’t be disappointed!

Mojo’s Pick of the Week: BOTTOM

BOTTOM is a mega-heavy metal trio fronted by Les Paul abuser Sina D’Crime. Originally from the Lower East Side of NYC, BOTTOM has risen like a phoenix in San Francisco with a new rhythm section and heavier-than-ever grooves. Since the early 90’s they’ve played with everyone from Acid King to YOB, including Electric Wizard, Monster Magnet, AFI and countless others. BOTTOM’s sound blends a raw, punky NYC influence with a San Francsico stoner fuzz groove to wild effect.

BOTTOM’s latest offering, a live-in-studio EP titled MMXII just dropped, and you can preview and purchase it at their Bandcamp site. You can also catch them live in San Francisco and San Jose in the next few weeks, including a date at Bender’s next month with my friends My Victim on the 29th! You know I’ll be there!
