Mojo’s Pick of the Week: Red 9

RED9BAND

I love rock trios. I really love good rock trios. There’s nowhere to hide in a trio, everyone contributes. From Cream to Rush to Primus to ZZTop, a three-piece can blow your mind with how much you can do with less.

Red 9 is a really good rock trio from Los Angeles that plays some serious balls-out rock. Versatile, modern, heavy, rock. Check out their excellent over of one of my favorite tunes, Nine Inch Nails‘ Head Like a Hole and see if you agree:

They rip it up tonight at the Troubadour LA – if you’re in the area, check them out!

Mojo’s Pick of the Week: Concordia

Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, up-and-coming band Concordia bring a mature sensibility to their brand of heavy melodic rock. They are currently touring with New Orleans rockers 12 Stones, and really impressed our promoter friends the Download Parlor when they rocked the Phoenix in Petaluma this week. “Ghost of You” from their debut “Clarity of Perception” is sufficiently epic to wonder why you’ve never heard them before! Check them out:

Mojo’s Pick of the Week — Dead Sara

Los Angeles’ Dead Sara, whose April 2012 debut brought us the breakout song “Weatherman”, bring an infectious raw energy to their brand of garage rock. Check the video and tell me you aren’t moved. When I first saw it I was immediately blown away by the sound and passion of lead singer Emily Armstrong — it reminded of the first time I heard Kory Klarke with his New York political punk fury fronting Warrior Soul back in the day. Dead Sara have a softer side as well, able to pull off a soulful acoustic jam like “Sorry for it All” with equally disarming emotion. They were playing on the Vans Warped Tour until guitarist Siouxsie fractured her ribs recently, but will be returning in the fall to open for the Offspring. Catch them if you can!
