Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Dead Rock Commandos by Nightstalker

While there are definitely some worthy new releases that could get my vote for Pick of the Week right now, I’m having too much fun listening to Dead Rock Commandos by Nightstalker to not upvote it this week.

Nightstalker is a stoner metal band from Athens, Greece, and songs from this killer 2012 full length album keep popping up in my Spotify.

Probably because I dig Puta Volcano so much, this and a couple other great Greek rock and roll bands like Villagers of Ioannina City find their way into my Daily Mix playlists constantly. I love it.

Standout tracks: Dead Rock Commandos, Go Get Some. Check out the title track from Dead Rock Commandos and get hooked like me!

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Excruciation by Curse the Son

Of the recent very good new rock releases (and there have been many!), one that I keep coming back to is the latest full length from Connecticut’s Curse the Son.

Excruciation grabs you by the collar with the energetic gallop of “Suicide by Drummer” and leads you down some dark, dirty alleys, including twists into swampy, dirty blues along the way. Chock full of fuzzy riffs and sludgy beats overlaid with Ozzy-esque vocals, this album is a tasty sonic treat.

Fans of Black Sabbath and any of the NWOBHM bands will find this a headbanging relief from slick pop and modern production.

Standout tracks:  Suicide by Drummer, Worry Garden, Devil Doctor Blues

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Dead Star by King Buffalo

King Buffalo Dead StarEthereal, hypnotic, unhurried, and quietly epic, the latest album from King Buffalo draws you in with such unassuming ease that you don’t realize you’re caught in its snare until your head is bouncing and your hair standing on end (around minute 12, to be precise).

Released March 2020, Dead Star is an evolution from King Buffalo’s 2018 masterpiece Longing to Be the Mountain, while sharing some common threads with that popular favorite. New side trips into ambient and even 80s-influenced electronic music don’t dull the understated power contained in the psychedelic drone underpinning the compelling groove of this excellent album.

Fans of Pink Floyd, All them Witches, and Elder should check out the latest from this Rochester, New York power trio who just gets better with every new release.

Standout tracks: Ecliptic, Red Star Pt. 2, Eta Carinae
