Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Ariel Hyatt’s Social Media House Course

Social Media HouseAriel Hyatt is a social media expert who specializes in promoting and mentoring musicians to get their full potential out of the world of social media and online marketing. I’ve followed Ariel since the MySpace days, watching her grow her own business and presence, and have found her insights very helpful, from basic advice on branding to comprehensive year-end self-review exercises. She’s a very positive, knowledgable and encouraging person and I like to think of her as my social media and branding mentor.

Ariel HyattWith her 9 week online Social Media House course, currently being offered for free, Ariel takes you through all the important areas of modern social media to give you a solid foundation to build your online presence on. To be sure, it’s a fairly intensive course, and depending on where your skills are it may be a lot of work. In my case, I’ve already been through most of this on my own using best practices and Ariel’s advice so I’m using the course to add the missing 20% to my 80% and get some tips to build on.

It’s been a wealth of information, and it’s not something you can get through without a support group — or mastermind group, as Ariel likes to call it — so there are built-in forums available for collective comments, questions, and encouragement. So far I’ve found it to be a very positive and generous community of like-minded musicians and I highly recommend this course, and Ariel’s ongoing advice, to all musicians looking for a leg up in the world of social media and diy marketing.

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Armored Saint

Legendary LA metal band Armored Saint is back and kicking ass with a new album Win Hands Down, just released on June 2, 2015! Formed in Pasadena back in 1982, Armored Saint released their debut album March of the Saint in 1984 and were part of the rise of thrash alongside bands like Metallica and Megadeth.

Armored Saint

There were a few periods of hiatus where members were part of other bands (John Bush sang with Anthrax and bassist Joey Vera played with Fates Warning, for example) but they reformed in 2000 and have released two albums since then. Win Hands Down is loud and brutal and deservedly debuted on iTunes Metal in the top spot!

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – So-Called Someone

If you know me at all, you know I’m a fan of the blues, and one of my favorite modern bluesmen is Scott Colesby, whose one-man production is called So-Called Someone. With a steel guitar, a stomp box, and an iOS rig, he manages to sound ancient and modern at once, blending Chicago and Delta blues in a perfect fusion of old and new.

So-Called SomeoneHis catchy tunes are simple and authentic, driven by a finger-picked guitar and a gravelly growl tinged with self-reflective angst. The songs quickly get under your skin and make their home in the back of your mind. Scott has just released his 4-song debut EP called “To Hell or New Orleans” on iTunes and CDBaby, and it is excellent. I already can’t wait for the next one, absolutely pick it up if you dig the blues.

So-Called Someone is currently on a mini-tour with dates in Georgetown, Austin and Chicago to support the new EP. If you can’t make it there, you can find him playing locally in NOLA, and semi-regularly on ConcertWindow. Check his website and follow him on Twitter for updates.
