Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Alter Bridge

pickAlter Bridge is quickly on its way to being a household name on the strength of their fourth album, “Fortress”, released late last year. And yet they are not well known enough that I had to find them filed under “Creed” at SF’s Amoeba Records. Orlando, Florida’s Alter Bridge is guitar phenom Michael Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips from Creed, with the addition of powerhouse singing talent Myles Kennedy, known from his work with Slash. I saw Kennedy fronting Slash’s Snakepit and simply nailing Axl Rose’s parts during the G&R songs, and came away extremely impressed. I’m more impressed now.

Alter Bridge“Fortress” is heavy rock with a prog metal soul, calling to mind at times Dream Theater, Queensryche, and Fates Warning, but I swear the band I think of most when listening to it is cult favorite Psychotic Waltz. This masterpiece of an album hasn’t left my car since I bought it. Complex and powerful, yet melodic and haunting, it is definitely one of the best albums of 2013. Alter Bridge just played Australia’s Soundwave festival with the likes of Alice in Chains, Rob Zombie, Filter and Clutch. Catch them if you can and definitely pick up “Fortress“. You won’t be disappointed!

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Deap Vally

Deap VallyI love it when I randomly stumble onto music that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I just followed a link to stream some music at Spin and Deap Vally was loaded up on the player, so I pressed play to see what it was and instantly fell in love with this LA duo and their in-your-face fuzz rock.

Deap Vally consists of Lindsey Troy (guitar, vocals) and Julie Edwards (drums and vocals), and though they’ve only been around a couple of years, their raw, electric blues sounds like it’s been honed on the road for a lifetime. The sound is somewhere between the White Stripes and Cage the Elephant, and every song leaves me wanting more.

Their debut EP Get Deap! is available on iTunes.

Mojo’s Pick of the Week: Concordia

Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, up-and-coming band Concordia bring a mature sensibility to their brand of heavy melodic rock. They are currently touring with New Orleans rockers 12 Stones, and really impressed our promoter friends the Download Parlor when they rocked the Phoenix in Petaluma this week. “Ghost of You” from their debut “Clarity of Perception” is sufficiently epic to wonder why you’ve never heard them before!
