Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Corrosion of Conformity

Corrosion of ConformityOn my list of Desert Island Discs (thank you Tower Records for that concept) are Corrosion of Conformity‘s Wiseblood and In the Arms of God. The legendary songwriting and angsty vocal prowess of Pepper Keenan shines through on these albums like a fog-cutting, soul-illuminating spotlight.

After some years slinging axe with Pantera’s Philip Anselmo in the NOLA-based group Down, Pepper is back with the original lineup of North Carolina’s influential stoner/southern metal band Corrosion of Conformity, along with bassist Mike Dean, guitarist Woody Weatherman, and drummer Reed Mullin. This group is kicking ass together again on stage for the first time in 15 years, as Pepper said when I saw them at Slim’s in San Francisco this week.

He went on to say that they had just signed with Nuclear Blast records and will be working on a new album, due out in 2016. All I know is these guys looked extremely and refreshingly happy together as they churned out an inspired set of beastly songs spanning their decades-long career. If you have an opportunity to catch them on tour, especially in a small venue, cancel your plans and go. You will not be disappointed.

Excerpt from a review of their LA show via Metalassault.com:

The audience greeted the band with deafening roars, so much so that it caught Pepper Keenan off-guard and he didn’t hold back in expressing his pleasant surprise when talking on the microphone. Heads were banging and fists were pumping throughout the set, and the song ‘Paranoid Opioid’ garnered the most notable mosh pit. Reunions are often overhyped and do not deliver, but Corrosion Of Conformity’s reincarnated four-piece lineup has met and exceeded all expectations, at least as a live band.

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Deap Vally

Deap VallyA little bit of Gwen Stefani, a little bit of Janis Joplin, and a whole lotta Led Zeppelin and White Stripes make up the blues punk fury of LA’s Deap Vally. I had the pleasure of witnessing the power of the jumper-clad duo at the Chapel in San Francisco on the eve of their tour in support of none other than Marilyn Manson. The energy level started at 100% and never let up through their three-song encore, and gave me hope for the future of pure attitude rock & roll. Formed in 2011 in LA after the duo met in a needlework class of all things, Deap Vally have been successfully carving our their niche ever since. Their debut CD Sistrionix is a great collection of rockers, and only slightly more sedate than their high energy live show. Catch them if you can, and definitely pick up Sistrionix and file it next to your White Stripes discs. Good luck and have fun on tour Lindsey and Julie!

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – The Devil in California

Devil in CaliforniaHailing from the San Francisco Bay Area but sounding like they crawled straight from the swamplands of the deep South, the heavy blues rock of The Devil in California delivers one of the most solid performances I’ve seen in a while. The band is fronted by powerhouse vocalist Tony Maison and features a dual attack from guitarists Jamie Cronander and Snake (ex of Skinlab), with Matt Stewart bringing both the bottom end and the high harmonies while Eddie Colmenares lays down the beat. They’re currently touring their just-released debut album “Longer Ride Down”, which is now living in my CD player — I can’t get enough of songs like “Black Hand” and “Delta Sludge”. PIck up their killer debut at the usual outlets, and catch them live if you can, you will not be disappointed!

Check out their first video release, the killer track “Black Hand”
