Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Ghost

Ghost BC They’ve dropped the B.C. from their name and dropped their newest album MELIORA, and I’ve dropped my side-glancing skepticism of the band Ghost. There’s no denying the power of the heavy, groovy metallic riffs that Papa Emeritus III and the Nameless Ghouls have laid out in this latest album. Let us take a moment to reflect on the majesty of this track “From the Pinnacle to the Pit”. I can’t stop listening to it.

Ghost gets away from the Cookie Monster growls of much modern metal and goes in the complete opposite direction with a 90s Britpop feel. They can in fact be oversoft in the vocal department, which is part of what took me so long to come around. But even though they can sound like the Pet Shop Boys snuck onstage to take over for Vivian Cambpell-era Dio, they’ve unrepentantly carved out their niche in the metal world. From their meticulous costumes and consistent message to the tight, clean, and majestic production of this album, these guys know exactly what they’re doing. They can be heavy as Testament one minute and as soft as Simon and Garfunkel the next. Whatever it is, they’ve made a believer out of me.

Meliora means ‘better’ and Ghost have done nothing but get better over time. I’ve been hearing for years what a great live show they put on and I don’t think I’ll miss them next time around!

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Armored Saint

Legendary LA metal band Armored Saint is back and kicking ass with a new album Win Hands Down, just released on June 2, 2015! Formed in Pasadena back in 1982, Armored Saint released their debut album March of the Saint in 1984 and were part of the rise of thrash alongside bands like Metallica and Megadeth.

Armored Saint

There were a few periods of hiatus where members were part of other bands (John Bush sang with Anthrax and bassist Joey Vera played with Fates Warning, for example) but they reformed in 2000 and have released two albums since then. Win Hands Down is loud and brutal and deservedly debuted on iTunes Metal in the top spot!

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – The Devil in California

Devil in CaliforniaHailing from the San Francisco Bay Area but sounding like they crawled straight from the swamplands of the deep South, the heavy blues rock of The Devil in California delivers one of the most solid performances I’ve seen in a while. The band is fronted by powerhouse vocalist Tony Maison and features a dual attack from guitarists Jamie Cronander and Snake (ex of Skinlab), with Matt Stewart bringing both the bottom end and the high harmonies while Eddie Colmenares lays down the beat. They’re currently touring their just-released debut album “Longer Ride Down”, which is now living in my CD player — I can’t get enough of songs like “Black Hand” and “Delta Sludge”. PIck up their killer debut at the usual outlets, and catch them live if you can, you will not be disappointed!
