Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Mother by In This Moment

In This Moment - MotherIn a dark week in a dark time, I unexpectedly found light and renewal in the pure cathartic power and emotion of In This Moment‘s newest release, Mother. With amazingly powerful covers of songs like Fly Like an Eagle and We Will Rock You (feat. Lzzy Hale of Halestorm), as well as hair-raising originals like The In-Between, the latest from Maria Brink and crew is a must have.

While this gothic metal group is known for its mind blowing visuals and outrageous stage shows (I can attest!), make no mistake, the music stands on its own. Mother is out March 2020 and streaming everywhere. Go get levitated!

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Refractions by Lowrider

Lowrider - RefractionsHonestly, there is no way my Pick of the Week couldn’t be the surprise return of Swedish stoner rock legends Lowrider. The first time I ever heard them was on the jukebox at San Francisco’s legendary dive beer bar Toronado — and yes, any jukebox with Lowrider and Tool is the best jukebox, fight me — and I remember seeking out and buying their debut CD Ode to Io shortly thereafter.

Lowrider’s latest release Refractions sounds like the band fell into a wormhole in 1999 and emerged intact in 2020 without missing a beat. The album itself is more of a sonic landscape than a collection of songs you can point at and say, this song is a must listen. The whole thing is like a warm fuzzy electric blanket for your ears. It’s easily one of the must listens of 2020. If you love Kyuss and their offspring, you must check it out immediately.

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Death Angel “The Evil Divide”

Death Angel - The Evil Divide CoverBay Area thrash kings Death Angel are back with a new album on Nuclear Blast Records, “The Evil Divide”, a tour de force of hard-hitting, politically charged metal with melodic elements. Covering a range of topics from the hypocrisy of religion (“The Moth”) to bullying and the culture of terrorism (“Lost”), this album adds a new musical dimension to the long-lived thrash metal band’s already solid catalog.

Tight and angry as hell but melodic and accessible as well, this album is a leap forward for a band that lately seems to be getting better with every album, like their metal brothers Anthrax. There is a new confidence in this album that lets the songs breathe and evolve… it’s got a more well-rounded and mature feel than their last outing “The Dream Calls for Blood”, which was a relentless attack of quick riffs and shouty vocals that felt like one long song in multiple parts. “The Evil Divide” is a great album by a mature band at the top of their game.

“Lost”
