Mojo’s Pick of the Week – Freedom Hawk: Beast Remains

So much good music released lately, and this is the one I can’t get enough of right now. Virgina’s venerable Freedom Hawk has a brand new album called Beast Remains, and they had me at the first track, the energetic, moving “Solid Gold”.

The band’s sound is reminiscent of the best of 70s AOR and prog rock, while at the same time sounding both modern and timeless. Passionate, melodic, and grooving, Beast Remains is a perfect showcase of the band’s formidable songwriting and musical skills.

Whatever’s in the water at Virginia Beach, I want some. In the meantime, I’m just going to keep enjoying Freedom Hawk rock and hope they come this way soon.

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – The Age of Truth: Threshold

The Age of TruthFans of Black Sabbath and Corrosion of Conformity will definitely dig this Philly foursome. Yes they bring the heavy, but that heavy fuzz has a solid groove and a bluesy engine driving their doom train. Dirty, heavy, groovy, with songs about vampires and Poe-inspired twisted love songs, what’s not to like? Riffs as heavy as Sabbath, accompanied by vocals that go from sweet to an impassioned rasp that would make Pepper proud.

Standouts – “Come Back a God”, “Coraline”, “Supernatural Salesman”. Honestly, there’s not a bad song on this album, it’s all killer, no filler, including the bonus song Honeypot (cut from the vinyl version for space).

Catch these guys at the legendary Maryland Doom Fest this June, but in the meantime definitely pick up Threshold, I’ve been listening to it nonstop for about two weeks now. Rock!

Mojo’s Pick of the Week – The Hazytones

This power fuzz trio from Quebec recently dropped their full length debut on Ripple Records and are finishing up a crazy tour of 43 dates in 46 days across the US and Canada! I had the pleasure of seeing them last week at one of my favorite San Francisco clubs where they played as part of Ripplefest II, a showcase of up and coming Ripple Records bands.

They brought a crazy level of fever pitch energy to their smoldering set, which ended with their bass player bouncing through the crowd while laying down a frenetic bass line. I love power trios, and my hat is always off to a singer who plays lead guitar, let alone a red plastic Danelectro. Proof once again that it’s not the tools but the craftsman when it comes to making the most of your art!

I warmed up quickly to their self-titled debut disc, which I like more every time I listen to it. Check it out now, The Hazytones on Ripple Records. And watch for more from these guys in the future!
